The continuing story of global music plays out LIVE at these upcoming events:

 

 

This year's revamped and respirited Vancouver Folk Music Festival stars Spirit Of The West, Ozomatli, Michael Franti & Spearhead with Jayme Stone & Mansa Sissoko Markus James & The Wassonrai, Charanga Cakewalk plus Celtic trio, Lau,  July 18th, 19th and 20th.  

 

 

There's a big, new event on the festival scene just a wee bit out of town. Listen to the line up for the brand new Surrey Fusion Festival July 19th  with The Chieftains,  The Cottars, The Wheat In The Barley and more, and July 20th, Alex Cuba, Delhi 2 Dublin, Tropicana top a fabulous bill. There will also be food and cultural pavilions from around the world. It all takes place at King George Highway and Old Yale Road in Surrey. 

 

 

AND, July 19th and 20th just got a little more complicated. Check out the line up at this year's Whistler Music Festival at the base of Blackcomb: July 19th including Thievery Corporation, Bedouin Soundclash and Michelle Ndegecello, July 20th including Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Allen Tousssant Band and Robert Randolph and the Family Band. July 19th it's Beat Bash III with dancehall's biggest stars: Akon, Wyclef Jean and Sean Paul at GM Place.  

 

 

Discover Vancouver's hippest water-side hangout for contemporary global grooves. Electropical returns to the Arts Club Backstage Lounge on July 19th for another beat –driven dance party, courtesy of DJs Marc Fournier and Michael Laycock. Vive la diference!  

 

 

Sunday afternoons in July and August, stroll by Ron Basford Park on Granville Island for free music from All Over The Map. This new outdoor series at 2pm focuses on some cool collaborations like Silk Road Music and friends, July 6th, July 13th with West African music and dance with Myanda and the Kunaka marimba youth ensemble, July 20th is Polynesian with the Langley Ukulele Ensemble and Kuahane Polynesian Dancers, July 27th, hip hop with SOULdier's Dance, August 17th it's the Mozaico Flamenco Dance Theatre and August 24th there's Aboriginal with the Dancers of Damelahamid. If it rains, catch the shows indoors at Performance Works. 

 

 

20 groups are lined up to take you from Cuba to Tibet and Finland to Zimbabwe at the 21st Annual Mission Folk Music Festival, Fraser River Heritage Park, and July 25th through 27th. This year features an Irish Session for Celtic fans including Death Sprouted, James Keen & Randal Bays, and Brian O h Art, Lays How, Moira Smiley and guests.  

 

 

Crooked Still has a new line up and new album called, ‘Right Now’. Listen to Celt in a Twist for a debut and watch for their return to Vancouver at the St. James Hall on July 31st.  

 

 

Italian beat scientist, Gaudi returns to Vancouver for a very special evening of global and techno beats at The Red Room on July 31st. Guests include The Shimmy Dancers.  WATCH FOR HIS UPCOMING APPEARANCE ON world.beats!

 

 

West Vancouver gears up for the 18th Annual Harmony Arts Festival presented by Odium Brown ltd, August 1 through 10th. Performances include the North Shore News' World Music on the Millennium Development Stage at the foot of 15th Street including Alcvin Ramos, Marlin Ramazzini, ZimbaMoto and De La Terra on August 9th. August 10th, it's Khac Chi Ensemble, Shona Le Mottee, Kutapira and Locura.  

 

 

August 2nd, Canada's Celtic sweetheart returns to the west coast. Don't miss the extraordinary fiddling of Natalie MacMaster at the River Rock Casino.  

 

 

The 32nd Annual Powell Street Festival is the largest Japanese Canadian festival and the longest running community celebration in Vancouver! August 2nd and August 3rd, enjoy traditional and contemporary Japanese Canadian performances, including taiko drumming, sumo wrestling, martial arts demos, folk and modern dance, alternative pop/rock/urban music, visual arts, film/video, as well as a fantastic array of Japanese food, crafts & displays. August 2nd, performing solo on guitar, saw, stringed instruments, percussion, toys and more, Shugo Tokumaru is known for his atmospheric, poppy, psychedelic-folk songs fronted by lovely vocals. Afro-jazz pioneers NOMO come to the Media Club on August 10th. Catch this 8-piece afrobeat and electronica band from Michigan.  

 

 

Festival Vancouver returns with a big, new series in the big outdoors. The World At The Gardens series brings sensational music from around the globe to the Great Lawn at Van Dusen Botanical Gardens: August 13th it's Rajaton, Finnish a cappella sextet, August 15th, Yamandu Costa Trio from Brazil, August 17th it's Salsa Dura featuring Buena Vista Social Club alumnus, Miguelito Valdez.  

 

 

One of the most promising Celtic traditionalist bands to launch in the new millennium performs in Vancouver at the St. James Hall. Don’t miss Beoga from County Antrim, Ireland, August 15th

 

 

August 15th, 16th and 17th, plan to be in Cumberland for The Big Time Out 2008. Headliners this year include: K'naan, Delhi2Dublin, Adham Shaikh, Jorane and De La  Soul.

 

 

Afrikadey Festival 2008 will be at the Serbian Cultural Centre, 7837 Canada Way in Burnaby, August 16th and 17th featuring Glen Washington and many more artists. 

 

 

Buckwheat Zydeco & The Ils Sont Parti Band, fronted by contemporary Zydeco’s most popular accordionist Stanley “Buckwheat’ Dural comes to The Yale Hotel on August 17th. Jackpot is the name of the band's latest release. Party like a winner with Buckwheat.  .

 

 

Rock down to Richards and catch Eddy Grant in performance on August 19th. He's been working and a producer and entertainer, defining a whole new genre of Caribbean music called RingBang. That's Richards on Richards, August 19th.  

 

 

August 22nd, two modern legends of  Celtic trad., the Jimi Hendrix of the Uilleann Pipes, Paddy  Keenan and guitarist Tommy O’Sullivan perform at the St. James Hall.

 

 

Mariachi Los Dorados are going to Guadalajara to represent Canada at the International Mariachi Festival. Iceland's Sigur Ros take the stage in the acoustic excellence of the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on October 7th, playing tunes from their latest, Međ Suđ I Eyrum Viđ Spilum Endalaust (English translation: With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly). It's some of the most joyous music ever recorded by the band, which is saying something for Icelanders.
